Transform Criticism into Growth: How to Effectively Utilize Feedback for Success

by Kim Fitkin - 7/3/2023

Blaming others for not receiving proper feedback is a flawed argument. Better, heres how to flip it into valuable feedback: 1️⃣ Realize what you are hearing Is someone just venting or telling you what to do? Do they have anything valuable to contribute?   2️⃣ Understand the feedback type Reinforcing: telling you that you are on the right track. Developmental: a request to do things differently. Avoid blunt terms like good, bad, or constructive. 3️⃣ Listen for value Once you know whether its developmental or reinforcing, ask clarification questions to pull more value from the feedback. This can be about context, examples, or about the impact your behavior had.

4️⃣ React appropriately If there was enough value in it, thank you is all it needs. If you disagree or have a strong emotional reaction, dont defend yourself. Rejecting feedback on the spot tells people you dont value their opinion. Instead, tell them you appreciate their perspective and therefore will give it more thought.
