Shattering the Feedback Sandwich Myth: How Leaders Can Deliver Constructive Criticism Effectively and Compassionately
I get this question a lot from leaders…
“Is the feedback sandwich effective?”
I had so much fun joining Jay Sharma on his podcast recently.
We talked all about feedback.
It’s a subject I can’t get enough of.
Because I know as leaders we can do so much better.
– At giving feedback – And getting feedback
To answer the question…
Sure, it’s effective. Sometimes. But it can also go poorly.
There are consequences for using it.
Here’s what I think about it (real talk)
– It lacks credibility – It’s manipulative – It’s self-serving – It’s confusing
When you’re using this approach, think about why.
Are you trying to make it easier for them to get feedback?
Or easier for you to say it?
And at what cost?
There’s a better way.
– Be clear – Be timely – Be specific – Be confident – Be compassionate – Create psychological safety – And don’t forget to follow up
