How Leaders Can Transform Defensive Reactions into Opportunities for Growth
I’ve been told I get defensive as a leader.
My immediate response?
Cross my arms, eyes wide, and exclaim, “No I dont!”
Ironic, right?
Defensiveness. That quick, knee-jerk reaction we have when we feel our ideas or competence is under attack.
Its human and its natural.
Being a modern leader doesn’t mean you never get defensive.
We’re all human.
It means we recognize our defenses and understand what triggers them.
Learning how to navigate them.
That way we foster a more open and constructive dialogue.
Thats where real growth happens - in the uncomfortable moments of self-awareness.
Nobodys perfect, and I am definitely a member of the not-perfect club.
But I try to view these moments not as personal attacks, but as opportunities.
Opportunities to grow, to learn, and to better understand ourselves. And to truly listen to those sharing feedback with us.
Are you open to criticism and feedback? Could you be better?
