4 Life-Changing Lessons Learned from Growing Up as the 'Poorest Kid' in Town

by Kim Fitkin - 6/3/2023

I felt like the poorest kid growing up

and I hid it from everybody.

➡️ I worked at the school lunch line so I can get a free meal and make $6.75 each time (so my parents didn’t have to spend money on food).

➡️ Instead of hanging out with friends, I had 7 minimum wage jobs between the ages of 12 and 17, working both nights and weekends.

➡️ I walked, biked and took the public bus as much as I could so my parents didnt have to spend much on gas.

➡️ I gave up an entire summer to work full time at Sears making $6.75/hour just so I can buy a 1987 Honda Civic that cost me $1100.

I was extremely jealous of my peers who had nicer cars, better clothes and lived in nicer homes.

They seemed to have access to everything that was beyond my reach.

The cycle of jealousy was endless and draining.
